The world is made up of individuals and each individual has strengths and weaknesses. Goodwill’s Beyond Barriers program is based on this. Beyond Barriers is an employment program for neurodiverse young adults. While the concept is straight forward, the program is about much more than employment, it’s about growth and success.
An individualized program is created for each client, based on their needs and skills. Individuals who are neurodiverse can possess very specific talents. Beyond Barriers strives to find these talents and channel them into a successful career.
Once a client's skills and needs are determined, the mechanics of the program begin. Working with a Beyond Barriers Career Coach, a resume and cover letter are built, practice interviews begin and a job search is underway.
Robert became a Beyond Barriers client in 2025 and is currently working as a cashier at a local gas station chain. “I wish I would have done it sooner,” said Robert. “They’ll help you find a job, no matter what. I am actually happy to have someone to help me.” Robert’s Career Coach, Ashley, says he is very consistent with his check-ins. This shows the trusting relationship between Robert and Ashley.

The importance of the connection between Career Coach and client is clear. Once a client has found a job, their coach does check-ins and even visits them on the job site. Clients have access to all of Goodwill’s programs. Robert is also part of Goodwill’s SNAP to Success program and receives SNAP benefits.
“The strength of this program are our Career Coaches,” said Betsy Delgado, Senior Vice President and Chief Mission and Education Officer. “The relationship between our staff and our clients brings a sense of comfort and trust, which is crucial for individuals who are neurodiverse.”
Goodwill has relationships with hundreds of local employers. These partnerships are crucial as the employers have a specific understanding of the clients needs and skills. Clients are allowed to job shadow and in some cases clients can volunteer with an employer to determine if the job is a good fit.
Helping people find employment is a big part of Goodwill’s mission and Beyond Barriers is a very important addition to that objective. If you or someone you know could benefit from Goodwill’s Beyond Barriers program, email beyondbarriers@goodwillpeo.org or call 309-427-8053.
