For over two decades, Tim Brown worked for Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana’s Commercial Services division through the AbilityOne program. However, after learning that his contract was coming to an end, he knew he needed to pivot careers. With his disability affecting learning retention and being accustomed to the position that he held for so long, he had concerns that finding a new job wouldn’t be possible.
Before his contract expired, Tim was connected with TalentSource™, Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana’s in-house talent agency. TalentSource provides job placement, internship and externship opportunities as well as career advancement support to Goodwill employees, mission and education participants.
With TalentSource’s help and expertise, Tim immediately began working on sharpening his resume and improving his interview skills. After having such a long tenure in a mailroom capacity, Tim was unsure of what field or career he wanted to pursue next. TalentSource helped him be aware of his options and helped guide him toward the health care field.
“I wouldn’t have even thought about working in a hospital because I didn’t think it was possible,” said Tim. “I didn’t think I was qualified, but TalentSource stressed my transferable skills. They were patient with me and found an opportunity that matched what I was looking for.”
In July 2024, Tim started his career at Community Hospital South as a food service partner, a role that entails cleaning and sanitizing dishes, collecting trays, and contributing to a safe and positive environment for the patients in the hospital.
Tim was anxious when he first joined the hospital, especially if he had to work by himself. However, with TalentSource’s support and an accommodating supervisor, Tim was able to acclimate to his new role and begin to thrive.
“I took myself out of my comfort zone and pushed through regardless,” said Tim. “This is the right environment for me. Now, I look forward to work. I feel like I’ve been here for years and it hasn’t actually been that long.”
Tim enjoys being able to move and stay busy throughout the work day, as well as feeling like he’s a part of something bigger than himself.
“It feels good to be a part of a team and family,” said Tim. “I feel more connected than ever.”
Tim is excited for the future and sees many pathways he can take. While working at his current position, Tim wants to explore his interest in sterile processing, a crucial part of providing safe health care procedures. He recommends TalentSource’s services because of the agency’s adamant encouragement and patience.
“TalentSource saw the potential in me and said I could do it. They saw something in me that I didn’t necessarily see in myself. This process has shown me that I can do great things.”
