Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana’s Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) is a work-based training program for older adults ages 55+. Participants are not only provided with the training needed to be successful in today’s working world but also receive opportunities that can open doors to potential careers.

After moving to Indiana, Leslie Joliff wanted to return to the workforce to help people in her community.

Through SCSEP, she was trained and paired with an emergency homeless shelter in Connersville, Indiana. Her experience working with this community service partner completely altered her worldview.

“At first, I didn’t know what I was doing and what I was getting myself involved in,” said Leslie.

Initially, Leslie had challenges understanding the needs of the population the homeless shelter served. By working with this population weekly, she learned about what led each person to become homeless and gained greater patience with their barriers.

“I have learned that every circumstance is different,” said Leslie. “Just because you are homeless, it doesn’t make you any less of a person. We just have to be there to help in whatever capacity we can.”

Because of her training, Leslie has also learned how to properly manage and mediate conflict, which she had previously struggled with. Her confidence has grown, and she is able to step away from her work without affecting her long-term mental health.

Leslie has built excellent relationships with her supervisors, colleagues and clients. They refer to her as “Miss Leslie” and the “mom” of the shelter, and they often speak of her great compassion and patience.

Leslie enjoyed her participation in SCSEP, and she’s grateful for her transformative training.

“I like meeting new people and meeting with my coach,” said Leslie. “It has been an eye-opening experience. I never realized how sheltered a life I have lived. I appreciate everything everyone has done and continues to do.”

Leslie is excited about the prospect of being able to help more people in her community. Throughout her training, Leslie has surprised herself with her growth. With SCSEP’s help, Leslie looks forward to continuing her work in a field that aligns with her passion and allows her to give back to her community.
