High school is a journey of self-discovery, but for some students at Indianapolis Metropolitan High School, that journey includes navigating the rewards and challenges of parenthood. As a tuition-free public school through Goodwill of Central and Southern Indiana, Indy Met is designed to break down barriers to education. Perhaps no program embodies this mission more deeply than the Parent Life elective.

Held every Monday through Thursday afternoon every other semester, this class is a sanctuary for students with young children, many of whom are enrolled in the school’s Young Learners Child Care program, located on site and only available to students enrolled at the school. Led by Nora Oliver, a dedicated teacher with over five years at the school, the elective provides a bridge between academic ambition and parental responsibility.

The program is a collaboration with Parent Life, a branch of Central Indiana Youth for Christ. Under the guidance of coordinator Niccole Wilkes, who has championed this partnership since its inception, the curriculum focuses on the power of the “next right choice.” Students are encouraged to make the most of their circumstances while pursuing a bright future.

The class is hands-on, meaning they are doing what they are learning. Students dive into practical lessons, like preparing healthy snacks for toddlers or mastering early dental hygiene, often featuring special guest speakers. However, Parent Life understands that you cannot focus on a lesson if your basic needs aren't met. That’s why every session provides a stack of diapers and formula for the little ones, a light, nourishing snack for the moms and access to a “Baby Boutique,” where students can order essentials like clothing or additional diapers to be delivered the following week.

Beyond the classroom, the support continues through one-on-one mentoring, where Niccole and her team meet students outside of school hours to address the unique, often overwhelming challenges of young parenthood.

For many, this elective is the reason they stay in school. In a traditional setting, a student-parent can feel like an outsider. Here, surrounded by peers who are also balancing homework with bedtime routines, that isolation vanishes. There is power in seeing a fellow mother walk across the graduation stage; it transforms a distant dream into a tangible reality.

The smaller class size helps create a calm, intimate environment, which is a rare find in a busy high school, allowing for meaningful conversations and interactions.

"When I walk into this classroom, it feels like a safe space," says one Indy Met student. "We can actually talk about the real stuff. The talks we have here help give me the strength to keep going."

At Indy Met, the goal isn't just to hand out diplomas; it’s to build a foundation where both the student and their child can thrive. Through Parent Life, these young parents aren't just surviving high school; they are leading their families toward a legacy of success.
