Today, more Americans remain employed longer and retire later than the once-standard age of 65. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) older adults make up 23.2% of the total workforce.
The core focus of this annual observance is to recognize the valuable skills, reliability and experience older adults bring to workplaces. Awareness is brought to this population as a great solution to the workforce. Specific initiatives like the Senior Community Service Employment program (SCSEP) are highlighted that create the opportunity for paid training and skill-building for adults 55 and older.
Goodwill proudly implements SCSEP, a national training and employment program for individuals who are 55 or older. Through SCSEP, participants receive paid on-the-job training in part-time, service-oriented positions in their communities.
The key program benefit for older workers is building confidence and skills to overcome barriers to employment. Each SCSEP position is approximately 20 hours per week with a nonprofit, government or education organization. Participants work with a SCSEP coach, who will match them with positions that fit their personal skills, interests, schedule, location and physical capabilities.
With Goodwill’s help, program participants will utilize the skills and knowledge they have learned to pursue permanent full or part time employment. For the prospective employers, the benefit is trained employees who are mature, eager to work, and experienced.
At Goodwill, the value of older workers is recognized and these individuals are encouraged to apply for positions within Goodwill as well as with our employer partners in the community. .
