The Veteran Among Us

In honor of Military Appreciation Month, we pause to honor the men and women who have dedicated their lives to protecting our freedoms. At Goodwill Commercial Services, we are especially proud to share the story of James Brown, affectionately known by his colleagues as “JB.” For 24 years, JB has been a cornerstone of the Fort Benjamin Harrison Commissary location, bringing the same discipline and heart to his role today as he did during his decades of military service.

Service was in James’ blood long before he donned a uniform. Growing up with a father who served in World War II and several uncles who were veterans, James always knew the Army was his calling. While he planned to enlist after high school, destiny moved faster. He was drafted into the Army and served a two-year tour with a supplies unit in Vietnam. Despite contracting malaria during his deployment, his commitment to his country never wavered.

After returning home, James found he missed the structure and camaraderie of military life. He served in the Army National Guard out of Greenfield, Indiana, from 1973 to 1976. However, while working as a personal trainer, he had a realization that changed the course of his life. Seeing retired military members entering the gym at age 38, James realized he was not done yet. In 1982, at the age of 30, he made the bold choice to reenlist.

Reenlisting meant James had to start back at the rank of private and endure Basic Training all over again. He transitioned into Air Defense and Armed Combat, eventually mastering the M61 Vulcan. Because of his Vietnam experience and superior physical fitness, he became a natural leader and mentor for younger recruits. By the time he retired in 2002 at the age of 52, James had become an instructor teaching officer basic training, leaving an indelible mark on the next generation of leaders.

Retirement did not mean slowing down for James. In 2002, he joined Goodwill Commercial Services as a forklift driver and warehouse worker at the Fort Benjamin Harrison Commissary. Today, at 76 years old, he continues to excel in that role while also serving as the site Safety Ambassador.

And, thanks to Goodwill, working at the commissary is about more than just a paycheck to James. “Working at the commissary, being surrounded by members of the military,” he says, “it allows me to still feel like I am part of that family.”

His site supervisor, Darwin Jessup, calls him a powerhouse and notes that JB’s work ethic is an inspiration to everyone on the team. “I hope I can do what he does when I’m that age,” Darwin says.

James will also tell you he is not quite done yet. He believes staying active is the key to his longevity. “I have a few more years ahead and there are still some things I want to do,” he says. “Working keeps me young.”

James’ journey is a testament to the idea that service is a lifelong calling. Whether he is operating a forklift or mentoring a coworker, James Brown embodies the spirit of resilience and community. This month, we salute James for his bravery and his unwavering 24 years of dedication to the Goodwill family.
