When Vicki Parks of Richmond, Indiana first enrolled into Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana’s Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) she was very hesitant about starting over due to her age. However, once Vicki gave the program a chance and began to understand the support that she would receive while enrolled, she realized that it was a perfect fit for her.

Goodwill’s SCSEP program provides opportunities for older workers ages 55+ to participate in paid, on-the-job training that helps reintroduce them to the workforce while opening doors for potential career opportunities. Program participants work closely with SCSEP staff, including a SCSEP Guide, to help them learn and practice new skills. As participants progress, the SCSEP team will find placements with local host agencies so participants can learn real work experience that leads to regular employment.

As she progressed through the program, Vicki was matched with A Better Way Services, Inc., formerly Genesis of Richmond, Inc., a host agency that provides services and resources for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in Richmond and the surrounding area. At first, Vicki was hesitant about this training opportunity, worried about potential challenges and whether or not she would be a good fit.

“At my age, I felt that it would be difficult, even though I have kept up with technology”, said Vicki. “Without SCSEP and my Guides, I probably would not have attempted this. It was nice to have someone who had my back.”

Though the training assignment has had its challenges, the support Vicki received from SCSEP staff and her Guides gave her the confidence to try something new. Vicki is now thriving in her new position and she positively impacts both her coworkers and the individuals they serve every day she comes into work.

“My coworkers are so empowering,” Vicki said. “I have learned so much from them and have learned so much from women empowering women. It is a completely different atmosphere. A Better Way Services is a place that helps women empower themselves and bring out their potential. I am finding out I am more capable than I even imagined. I feel like it is the best place I have ever worked.”
