Since Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana implemented Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) in Indiana in 2011, the program has grown from a single team of eight nurses in Indianapolis into a statewide support system serving 62 counties. At its core, the mission remains deeply impactful: pairing low-income families with dedicated registered nurses from pregnancy through their child’s second birthday.

As we mark this milestone 15-year anniversary**,** we reflect on an extraordinary legacy: over 10,000 families served and more than 7,000 healthy babies born across Indiana.

The early years of parenthood shape a child's future, but overcoming social and economic barriers, such as unstable housing, financial strain, or lack of support, can make that journey feel overwhelming. Goodwill NFP steps into that gap, providing personalized health guidance, evidence-based care, and emotional support right at home.

Nurses assist mothers with:

- Healthy Pregnancies & Births: Regular wellness checks, safe sleep guidance, and counseling on nutrition and breastfeeding.
- Child Development: Tracking crucial developmental milestones through age two.
- Self-Sufficiency Goals: Connecting mothers with resources for continuing education, workforce development, stable housing, and reliable childcare.

Behind the numbers are thousands of individual journeys of resilience, hope, and determination. Stories like Sha’Nila’s, Dominique’s and Cieara’s highlight the true heart of Goodwill Nurse-Family Partnership:

“My nurse, Audrey, was there from the very beginning of my pregnancy and she helped me take it step by step,” said Sha’nila. “She reassured me that I wasn’t alone and she guided me through both the medical side of pregnancy and the personal struggles I was facing in my life.” (You can watch Sha’nila’s full story [here](https://youtu.be/igOlIdNDRqc?si=IeW-6VAK_iwuZVnD).)

Stories like Dominique’s

Learning she was pregnant as a teenager completely shifted Dominique focus to her son's future. Facing housing instability and lacking transportation in Indianapolis, she moved to O'Connor House in Carmel, a shelter for single mothers, where she stayed for over 18 months until securing a place of her own. Throughout the uncertainty, her Nurse Home Visitor, Máire, was a constant pillar of support.

And stories like Cieara’s

When Cieara Jake enrolled in the program, she was managing severe anxiety and depression while trapped in an abusive relationship. With her Nurse Home Visitor navigating every step alongside her, Cieara not only welcomed a healthy baby girl, she found the strength to leave her abuser, buy her own home, and earn a bachelor’s degree while working full-time. Goodwill Nurse-Family Partnership’s work aligns closely with state health initiatives aimed at reducing infant mortality, encouraging breastfeeding, and ensuring every child enters the world with the best possible start. Over the past decade, sustained investment in maternal and child health, including expanding access to rural families, has driven groundbreaking progress across the state:

- 2017–2019: Following state investment in NFP expansion in 2018, Indiana’s infant mortality rate fell from 7.3 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2017 down to 6.5 in 2019.

- 2022–2024: Further expansion, supported by private funding in 2022 and increased state investment in 2023, preceded a further decline to 6.3 in 2024, marking the lowest recorded infant mortality rate in Indiana since 1900.

While many community partners contributed to this historic progress, these milestones underscore the profound value of continued, long-term investment in maternal and infant care.

Fifteen years in, the evidence is clear: when you empower a mother with trusted personal nurse and community resources, you don't just change one life, you uplift entire generations.
