There is a profound power in the moment you hold your high school diploma, knowing you fought for every bit of the success it represents and knowing it is the key that unlocks your future. For Brandi Demmings, her November 2025 graduation from The Excel Center® campus in southeast Indianapolis was the culmination of a journey defined by resilience, family, and an unbreakable spirit.

Brandi’s path was never easy. After dropping out of high school in the 9th grade to care for her ill grandmother while navigating her own pregnancy, life became a whirlwind of caregiving and survival. Years later, she thought she had found a solution to her goals when she paid for and completed an online program that promised her a high school diploma.

Sadly, the strength of Brandi’s resolve was tested when she applied for a government position. During the application process, she learned that the online program was not actually a valid high school diploma.

Brandi didn't give up, she went searching for a school where she could earn the state recognized Core 40 Diploma she needed.

“I just didn’t think I was capable of doing all the things I needed to do to get my diploma,” Brandi recalled, feeling the sting of uncertainty. But instead of letting that setback define her, she went searching for a real second chance. She found it at The Excel Center.

Returning to the classroom is a daunting prospect, especially when you are balancing the roles of wife and mother. Brandi admits that the initial transition was stressful. However, the atmosphere at The Excel Center was different.

"Once I went to orientation, I knew I belonged there. The staff were nice and they weren’t judgmental," says Brandi.

One of the greatest burdens lifted from Brandi’s shoulders was the school’s on-site childcare. Being able to use the free childcare allowed Brandi to focus on her studies, knowing her family was safe and nearby. They shared lunches and breaks together, turning the pursuit of education into a family affair.

Supported by life coaches who refused to let her settle, Brandi’s confidence caught fire. She didn't just want to pass; she wanted to excel. She set a goal to raise her 3.86 GPA to a 4.0. By the time she finished, she had surpassed even her own expectations, graduating with a staggering 4.11 GPA.

Her journey took her far beyond the classroom. Brandi began sitting on student panels, shaking hands with mayors and senators, people she never dreamed she would meet. These connections led to a working relationship with Senator Aaron Freeman, proving that when you show up for yourself, the world starts showing up for you.

“I appreciate the excellent work Brandi has accomplished at The Excel Center and I was happy to assist her in starting the next chapter of her life.” Senator Freeman commented.

Brandi graduated with far more than just her Core 40 Diploma. She walked away with 9 college credits that she earned through dual-enrollment and a certificate in Emergency Telecommunications, qualifying her for a career in emergency dispatch.

Today, Brandi is working as a router for a medical transportation organization while collaborating with Senator Freeman to transition into a dispatching role.

“My diploma is more than just a piece of paper,” Brandi says. “It tells the story of all I overcame to get it.”
