More Than Just a Job Search

While searching for employment opportunities at one of Goodwill of Central Illinois’ monthly hiring events, Hunter Raissner was referred to Goodwill’s Beyond Barriers program. Beyond Barriers is a program for neurodiverse individuals to receive assistance with building job skills and support with securing and maintaining employment.

Individualized plans are created for each person enrolled in the program, offering opportunities to job shadow, practice interview skills and build the resume the participant desires. Support goes beyond just landing a job, as Beyond Barriers coaches continue to work with participants to ensure a smooth transition into their new workplace.

After joining Beyond Barriers, Hunter explored his options and the job fields open to him. Instead of working immediately, he decided to further his education. He was able to get into the Climate Works program through Illinois Central College. He took eight weeks of construction and carpentry classes, becoming the first Beyond Barriers participant to ever graduate from the program.

“I enjoyed Climate Works,” said Hunter. “I made new friends and got new skills under my belt. I like to work with my hands, build things and see the journey of what I learned over time.”

Even after completing Climate Works, Hunter still had ambitions to increase his education. Currently, he’s studying for his driver’s license exam, which will open the door to new career opportunities. Not only has Hunter made strides in his educational attainment, but his soft skills have also evolved.

“Hunter has really grown in his reliability and dependability,” said Zachary, Hunter’s Beyond Barriers career coach. “By the end of the Climate Works program, he had perfect attendance. He’s very motivated and that’s going to help him succeed.”

As of June 2026, Hunter has secured a full-time job as a machine producer at a local aluminum company. However, once Hunter earns his driver’s license, he wants to work toward a CDL certification. His ultimate professional goal is getting into the automotive repair industry by earning a certification through continued education. In his personal life, he wants to move out, live on his own, and start working his dream job.

“I see myself working on cars and living the best I can,” said Hunter.
