Dyamond Twyman was referred to Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana through the Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis Skills for Independence, Transition and Employment program (SITE). This program helps young students with intellectual disabilities receive their transitional education on a college campus rather than in high school.
SITE teaches participants career prep, accountability and personal responsibility skills, such as city navigation, computer literacy and time management.
“They taught me how to apply for a job and catch the bus around the city,” said Dyamond.
After honing her skills, Dyamond felt more prepared to find a job, earn an income and gain greater independence. She secured janitorial employment opportunities for Indiana’s state government and at a hospital, where she discovered a passion for cleaning.
“I’m proud of my work,” Dyamond said. “And I'm able to meet new people.”
With the help of her family and her SITE mentor, Dyamond transitioned to Goodwill’s Janitorial Training Program (JTP). The Janitorial Training Program is designed for individuals with barriers to employment who have little or no prior work history, a sporadic work history or have an interest in learning skills associated with janitorial work in a commercial setting.
Now, Dyamond still pursues her passion, practicing office, window and spot cleaning. Through JTP, she can develop her technical and soft skills even further, increasing her independence and maintaining a vital income. Dyamond’s experience at JTP will help her prepare for a certificate from the Cleaning Management Institute (CMI), a valuable tool that can expand her employment prospects.
Dyamond is anticipated to complete the 480-hour program by January 2025. In the meantime, Dyamond’s sister and mother are supporting her through her training and at home.
“I still stay in touch with my SITE mentor too,” said Dyamond. “They all help support me.”
In her spare time, Dyamond does word searches and writes, often posting her writing on social media. Though she’d like to stay in the janitorial industry, she could also see herself pursuing a career as a writer.
