Goodwill Rebuilds After Storm Devastates Winchester Store

On the evening of March 14, 2024, Goodwill’s employees and neighbors in Winchester faced a frightening ordeal as severe storms swept through the community, leaving devastation in their wake. The Goodwill Store located in Winchester, which had just opened in August of 2023, sustained major damage and had to be temporarily closed.

Understanding the importance of our services and the role we play in the community, Goodwill committed to rebuilding the store and supporting our displaced employees.

First, all employees received a care package immediately following the storm, which included groceries, a gas card and hygiene supplies.

Employees also received a week off from work following the storm – with pay – and offered continuous employment with Goodwill at another store. Twelve employees accepted the offer and currently receive reimbursement for the extra miles they incur as a result of their temporary relocations.

Several Goodwills across North America made financial gifts to help support our dislocated employees, all of whom received a direct financial gift from these donations. In addition, Goodwill Mission Coaches assisted two employees who sustained damage to their personal homes.

Following the storm, the store was quickly secured and cleaned up, and Goodwill was able to recover a large portion of the items that were donated by the community. We are also taking this opportunity to make several improvements to the store, including updating the overall look, and it is on track to reopen by the end of 2024.

We are proud to be a vital part of the Winchester community and look forward to our grand re-opening!
