In collaboration with Cook Medical, Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana recently hosted members of the Indiana General Assembly for tours of three local Goodwill sites, including the Goodwill Commercial Services manufacturing facility at 38th and Sheridan, Indy Fresh Market, and The Excel Center® on Meadows Drive.
The tour began at the manufacturing facility on the city’s east side, where Goodwill employees play an integral role in medical device manufacturing in partnership with Cook Medical. Cook Medical’s Vice President of Public Policy, Gretchen Gutman, and Account Executive, Erin Greene, led the tour while highlighting how the strategic partnership between Cook Medical and Goodwill Commercial Services is revitalizing this neighborhood, working to alleviate unemployment and poverty rates in the area.
Next members toured Indy Fresh Market. In an extension of the partnership between Cook Medical and Goodwill, Indy Fresh Market fulfills the need for a full-service grocery store in the neighborhood, which was previously a food desert. Indy Fresh Market is located at 6160 East 38th Street and is adjacent to the manufacturing facility. One reason this location was selected was for its easy access to Indy’s rapid transit Purple Line, which recently opened to the public.
Following the Indy Fresh Market tour, lawmakers visited The Excel Center. The Excel Center is Goodwill’s high school for adults, offering flexible schedules and free tuition to ensure each student’s success.
“We are grateful that the Indiana General Assembly Club voted on the spot to donate $500 to buy diapers for The Excel Center,” said Betsy Delgado, Goodwill’s Senior Vice President and Chief Mission and Education Officer. These diapers will support the school’s Young Learners Child Care, which provides free, onsite childcare to parenting students.
