Driven by Heart and Hope

In the heart of rural Indiana, where the roads stretch long and the opportunities can sometimes feel sparse, you would find David. When Susan Sheets, Goodwill TalentSource™ Rural Career Pathways Grant Coordinator, first met David in January 2025, he had just graduated from The Excel Center® in Richmond. He was a young man with a sharp mind for logic and math but faced barriers that would have caused many to stay exactly where they were.

Living 38 miles away from school without a driver’s license or a vehicle, David’s graduation seemed like a distant dream. Yet, through the dedicated support of his College and Career Readiness Specialist and life coaches who were there to encourage him, David didn't just reach the finish line, he crossed it with a Core 40 diploma, nine dual credits, and a well-paying job that ensured a positive future.

For David, the path to progress was paved with grit. He lived outside of town in an area with very few job prospects. To maintain his part-time job at a local restaurant, he regularly biked or walked ten miles roundtrip in the middle of winter.

Despite the freezing temperatures and a paycheck that rarely exceeded $200 every two weeks, David never missed a shift. His manager called him their most reliable worker. David was working for more than just a wage; he was working for his family. He had two clear objectives: securing a career in manufacturing and reuniting with his three younger siblings and infant niece, who had entered foster care in late 2024.

David’s main barrier to success was clear: Transportation. A manufacturing job in Muncie was 22 miles away, a nearly two-hour bike ride each way. It was a barrier that seemed insurmountable until a community of advocates stepped in. Through the collaboration of TalentSource, his Mission Coach Ben Hutto, the Economic Development Corporation of Wayne County, Indiana, and the WorkOne Muncie team, a plan was set in motion. The Mission Coach team was able to secure a scooter for David, a purchase that truly changed everything. With his new wheels, the distance to Muncie didn't seem so far anymore, and members of the Rural Career Pathways stakeholder team could direct him toward manufacturing opportunities there.

On September 2, David’s life took a monumental turn. He was hired at Diamond Plastics as an extrusion operator, starting at $23.00 per hour. In March, 2026, he was named Employee of the Month, a testament to his reliability and work ethic. This wasn't just a job; it was the foundation for his future. With his passion for mechatronics and software development, he is now preparing to start his journey at Ivy Tech Community College this fall.

Now living in his own home in Muncie with one of his siblings, David’s biggest hope of reuniting his family is even closer. Through legal assistance and a connection with the organization Foster Hope, David is on a clear path to that becoming a reality.

"Whenever I face a barrier," David says, "I tell myself that standing in one place and doing nothing isn’t going to get me over the mountain... I’m going to go over the mountain, around the mountain, or through the mountain to get where I want to be."

David’s story reminds us that while the climb may be steep, with a little help and a lot of heart, no mountain is too high to conquer. From high school diplomas to high-wage manufacturing roles, we provide the tools to help you stop standing still and start moving forward.
