National Nurses Week is a time to recognize the vital contributions of nurses and the essential role they play in building healthy communities. At Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana, we are proud to celebrate the incredible nurses who serve families through our Goodwill Nurse-Family Partnership® (NFP).

 

Goodwill NFP is a community health initiative available in 62 Indiana counties. The program pairs individuals pregnant with their first child with a registered nurse who provides ongoing visits from pregnancy through the child’s second birthday. These visits offer trusted guidance, health education, and emotional support, helping families give their children the best possible start during the earliest, most critical years of life.

 

Since launching in 2011, Goodwill NFP has supported more than 8,500 families across central and southern Indiana.

 

**What is the goal of the Nurse-Family Partnership?**

The primary goal is to improve health outcomes for both parent and child by providing consistent, personalized care from a registered nurse. Nurses help guide first-time parents through pregnancy, birth and early childhood, equipping them with tools and knowledge for a healthy future.

 

**What kind of support do families receive?**

Goodwill NFP nurses assist with prenatal care, breastfeeding, safe sleep practices, infant development and smoking cessation. They also help parents navigate barriers such as access to healthcare, housing, education, or employment, while offering emotional encouragement and support.

 

**Why are the first years so important?**

The earliest years of a child’s life are crucial for brain development, bonding and long-term well-being. Goodwill NFP helps families build strong, nurturing foundations that promote lifelong health and success for their children.

 

**How do nurses build relationships with families?**

Trust is key. Goodwill NFP nurses meet families where they are, both physically and emotionally. They form lasting, meaningful connections by showing up consistently, listening without judgment and empowering parents to reach their goals.

 

Goodwill NFP nurses partner with families to create better healthcare outcomes. They are advocates, educators and trusted partners in a family’s journey. During National Nurses Week, we celebrate their commitment, compassion and the life-changing impact they make every day in our communities.
