![IMG\_5384](https://blog.goodwillindy.org/hs-fs/hubfs/IMG_5384.jpeg?width=250&height=333&name=IMG_5384.jpeg)Cha’Mar is a senior at Indianapolis Metropolitan High School, and his high school journey is a story of growth, goal-setting, and hard work. When he first walked through the doors as a 10th grader, his main focus was playing basketball. He joined the team right away and has been a key player ever since. Over the years, however, his impact on the school has grown far beyond the basketball court.

His teacher, Nora Oliver, shared how much Cha’Mar brings to the school community. "Cha'Mar approaches life with a joy and excitement that makes him a pleasure to have in class. He is someone that people want to be around, and this is evident when he walks down the hallway. Throughout his years at Indy Met, he has grown into a leader among his peers both on and off the basketball court,” she said.

Cha’Mar’s dedication to his education was heavily inspired by his grandfather, who always emphasized the importance of learning. It did not matter to his grandfather whether that meant attending a traditional four-year college or learning a hands-on trade. What mattered most was continuing to grow. Taking that advice to heart, Cha’Mar became a 21st Century Scholar. He is now looking ahead to his future and considering several top Indiana colleges, including Purdue University, Indiana University Bloomington, Ball State and Franklin College. Outside of school, Cha’Mar likes to relax by playing video games and watching philosophical videos on YouTube.Those hobbies and with the support of his Indy Met teachers, have influenced his desire to major in either computer science or psychology.

“I really trust my teachers,” Cha’Mar said. “They are relatable and get it. They are like older cousins who give really good advice.”

To prepare for the future, Cha’Mar took advantage of dual credit classes during his time at Indy Met. These challenging courses gave him a head start on earning college credits while still in high school. He also tackled subjects like integrated chemistry and physics, computer science and accounting, proving that he is not afraid of academic challenges. Through all his hard work, he is set to graduate with his Core 40 High School Diploma.

Looking back on his high school experience, Cha’Mar appreciates what makes Indy Met special. He liked that the smaller classroom sizes allowed teachers to offer one-on-one help, which made a big difference in helping students improve their GPAs. He liked the school environment because students are recognized and rewarded simply for doing what they are supposed to do. By passing all of his classes, Cha’Mar was able to go on field trips to places like the Indianapolis Zoo, the local firefighter museum, and various art exhibits.

One of Cha’Mar’s favorite experiences was participating in the boys' mentorship elective led by community leader Anthoney Hampton. The class provided real, honest conversations about adulthood and navigating life.

Before heading off to college, Cha’Mar is eager to get his driver’s license, buy his first car and start his first job. As he prepares for the next chapter, he wants others to know how much Indy Met meant to him. He says that Indy Met is a great school, and he would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a place to learn and grow.
