A Message from Kent: Mental Health and the Workplace

Written by Kent A. Kramer | May 19, 2026 2:30:01 PM

At Goodwill, we know that mental health is not separate from the workplace. It shows up in our energy, our focus and our ability to navigate the challenges of daily life. For many of the individuals we serve and employ, work is not just a job. It is a source of stability, confidence and connection. That is why supporting mental health is part of how we support people.

Across our organization, we see firsthand how important it is for individuals to feel seen, supported and valued. Many of the people who come to Goodwill are managing more than one challenge or barrier at a time, whether that is adjusting to a new job, rebuilding after a setback, or balancing personal responsibilities.

Our role is not to define those experiences, but to create environments where people can succeed within them. It starts with teams that encourage one another, and it continues through the many ways our employees show patience, respect, and care for the people we serve and work alongside every day.

We also recognize that mental health is supported through opportunity, stable employment, skill-building and access to resources that help people move forward in their goals. When individuals feel secure in their work and confident in their path, it can make a meaningful difference in overall well-being.

I am proud of the environment our teams continue to build across Goodwill. It is a place where people are encouraged to bring their whole selves to work, where challenges are met with understanding, and where success is measured not only by outcomes, but by the way we support one another along the way.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, I want to thank our employees for the compassion they show every day. The work you do matters, not only in what it produces, but in how it helps others feel supported and capable of moving forward.

Together, we continue to build a workplace where people can thrive at work and beyond it.
